What books would you buy?

topic posted Wed, March 5, 2008 - 12:10 PM by  offlineRoxy
I got a gift certificate to a book store recently and if I stick with paperbacks I can buy around 10.
Here are some of my favorites:

Tom Robbins, Jitterbug Perfume
anything by Tom Robbins
Christopher Moore
Katherine Dunn, Geek Love
anything by Steinbeck
David Sedaris
Anthony Bourdain

Any suggestions? I was thinking about Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. But I would also love to hear about some new (or old) authors.
thanks!

Cloud Atlas was a great read. a little slow/long in parts. (and a few of the many endings a tad silly ultimately.) but definitely a virtuoso performance.

Do you have an Amazon account? You could go there and rate these favorites of yours highly, and then see what Amazon suggests. I have had only the very best results with their suggestions. Of course the more books you rate, the better your suggestions get.

CD Payne's Youth In Revolt is pretty darn funny... so is Frisco Pigeon Mambo

I'm so predictable but I did venture out a little bit. Here's what I ordered :

Wild Ducks Flying Backwards, Tom Robbins
      Naked, David Sedaris
You Suck: A Love Story, Christopher Moore
      Marabou Stork Nightmares, Irvine Welsh
      Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk
      Middle Sex, Jeffrey Eugenides
      American Gods, Neil Gaiman

I've read Naked and Marabou Stork Nightmares already, but worth reading again and again. The only one I'm thinking was a mistake was American Gods.
Has anyone read it? I think it may be more science fiction than I like.

Some of the posts had authors I have not heard of, so I will definetly check them out!

American Gods and Naked are the only ones I don't question. And I question the Sedaris, because I like his delivery so much that the words on the page just don't send me the way the radio bits do.
American Gods is a gem, and btw it's fantasy, not science fiction, albeit a darker and more mature fantasy than the run of the mill stuff. Gaiman in general and American Gods specifically are extensively and often discussed in the "I just finished reading..." tribe.
