How about each of us supplying a single title (and the author) of just one book we should read in 2009 and tell us a little bit about it and why we should read it ?

Wed, January 14, 2009 - 10:07 PMI very much dislike the word "should."
But go ahead, knock yourself out. -

Sat, January 24, 2009 - 11:08 PMThanks Mr M.
A review I found quickly sounded interesting www.buzzflash.com/store/reviews/1310 - but all they had mentioned as "censored" I have already read or hear about - including some of them on our nightly news and current affairs shows.. but it I see it - I will pick a copy up. -

Re: Just one book...
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 7:08 PMI'm also avoiding the "should"
in about everything in life. I enjoy reading, so it feels more voluntary to me.
Last year was a great year for books for me so..2009 appears ...promising.
I love to read!
off to it... perhaps an Aussie Author? -

Re: Just one book...
Fri, February 13, 2009 - 8:59 PMI’d suggest the Early Short Stories of John Updike. In his passing, America lost its premiere ‘man of letters’. His shoes indeed will be hard put to fill and these early works, each perfect in form, ‘should’ be enough to entice the reader onward into Updike’s oeuvre. Those already familiar to his major works will find much enjoyment and comfort in these lesser know pieces.

Re: Just one book...
Sat, February 21, 2009 - 8:11 PMI understand the sentiment but think people shouldnt be so anal about the word should. It's equivelant to a recommendation. It's not a negative thing at all. It's someone ceasing, uh, seizing, the opportunity to share a book they like. It's not always all about some narcissistic need to control others and be the infamous "right man." Right men are wrong men. But you dont have to be a wrong man to be a good right man. If you dont know the terminology I speak of that's fine. We all walk in the shadows & live in a dream whether or not we only see in infra-red. -

Re: Just one book...
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 12:09 PMIf I could recommend just one book to people, it would be The Savage Detectives. I loved it soooo much. I'm not necessarily saying you should, I'm just saying you'll probably be pretty pleased if you do. -

Re: Just one book...
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 6:38 AMI have it, but have been putting it off until I'm done with finals. I had an in depth study of the old testament class this term, and that was about as much heavy reading as I could handle. I'm excited though! 2666 is my idea of perfect sumer reading. I also want to track down some of his poetry sometime soon.

Re: Just one book...
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 9:46 AMSuggested reading then. And it went from Updike, to Bukowski's collection of prose, to collected Ballard, and the year isn't over yet.

Re: Just one book...
Mon, October 19, 2009 - 10:55 AMI also take umbrage at the word 'should' but bookworms may enjoy the passionate, sensual writing of Rikki Ducornet (any of her books) or any of William Kennedy's Albany cycle books.
